A world of
my own making.

My work gives form to the inner psychological experience: the dreams, emotions, memories, and unexpected associations that shape how I experience the world.

A colored-pencil drawing of an open eye in a patterned pyramid, charged by a lightning bolt from a brain filled with equations, words, colors, and musical notes.
In the Mind of a Day Dreamer2016 · Matthew Mahoney

In the Mind of a Day Dreamer (2016) offers an early portrait of that experience. The eye stays open: the daydreamer is awake, even while absorbed in an interior world. Behind it, a brain brings mathematical equations and language together with color, music, and drawing. A lightning bolt carries this brainstorm into the pyramid below. I meant it to express the delight of thinking and creating: the feeling of imagination charging my whole being.

The pyramid and eye became recurring symbols in my artwork. I came to understand the pyramid as the subconscious: a labyrinth holding dreams, impulses, emotions, and memories. The eye is the conscious mind looking inward, wandering through those rooms. I call their relationship the nous-psyche, or mind-soul.

Drawing became a way of “photographing” my interior worlds with Prismacolors on paper. Vivid dreams became poems and images; words became visual forms; fragments of old sketches found new lives in collage. This practice continues in journal covers that grow from dreams, encountered artworks, and unexpected images in ordinary things, even the suggestion of a dinosaur in bathroom tiles. Across these drawings, objects, and designs, I return to the Surrealists’ insistence that inner life deserves to be taken seriously, and to the possibilities of giving it a visible form.

“These experiments in photography as well as explorations of philosophy and psychology brought me back in touch with the wellspring of my subconscious and imagination.”
